Three Alarm Fire Destroys West End Building

Early in the morning of March 8th during a heavy rain storm Providence firefighters were dispatched to a possible structure fire at 700 Cranston Street at Benedict Street. Engine 8 arrived and transmitted a working fire with smoke showing from a 3.5 story commercial and residential structure and requested special hazards to assist with gaining entry due to roll down metal doors also Companies made several rescues via ground ladders. Engine 8 found heavy fire conditions in the basement extending into floor 1, while advancing lines into the basement a flash over occurred forcing the fire-ground operations to switch to defensive. Heavy fire in the basement extended to all floors and into the cock loft requiring a full third alarm assignment with special calls. Multiple hand lines and 4 ladder pipes contained the fire to the building of origin with minimal extension to the side 2 exposure a 1 story commercial building in about 2 1/2 hours. One occupant and six firefighters were transported for various injuries with none reported to be serious.
