General Alarm (5) Fire In Providence

Monday Night shortly before midnight Providence fire alarm dispatched Engine 14 & Ladder 6 to 498 Kinsley Avenue for a commercial fire alarm. Multiple reports of a building fire began ringing into dispatch as Engine 14 reported heavy smoke showing. On arrival a large one story block long vacant mill type building was heavily involved and a second alarm was transmitted. The building began to collapse shortly thereafter and a extensive exterior operation was started. A third alarm was struck followed by the fourth and fifth alarms bringing all city fire apparatus to the scene. A mutual aid box was struck for station coverage, Cranston Engine and ladder and Lincoln Ladder responded to the scene. Heavy fire took complete control of the building as crews setup a collapse zone. A collapse of the Sims Street side of the building took down live wires causing a power outage in the surrounding area. Heavy smoke could be seen for miles and lingered into the following morning causing DEM to issue a Air Quality Alert for as far away as East Providence. The major fire was knocked down in about three hours leaving a overhaul operation that lasted into the following week. The Providence Fire Prevention Office, Providence Police BCI, RI State Fire Marshal & ATF are investigating the cause of the fire. The fire was the largest fire since the June 16, 2001 6 Alarm Mill fire at 100 Bosworth Street.
