General Alarm (4) For Warwick's Westgate Condo

On Wednesday morning the Warwick Fire Alarm office received a Box Alarm from the Westgate Condominium located at 754 Quaker Lane (Route 2) On The Warwick, West Warwick, East Greenwich town line. Engine 5 arrived first due on the alarm and reported smoke showing from the top floor of a three story garden style apartment building. Firefighters attempted a aggressive interior attack but was forced to back out due to rapidly deteriorating conditions. A second alarm assignment was requested as fire began to rapidly extend into the common cockloft. Firefighters tried a trench cut on the roof but due to the stability of the roof were unable to stop the fire spread.Due to the buildings location located atop a large hill hydrant pressure began to drop additionally the supply line from the hydrant on Route two was struck by a vehicle and severed.Heavy fire took full control of the building as the over one hundred residents watched helplessly. A Tanker task force was requested in addition to a additional alarm being transmitted bring in a large mutual aid response from across the state. The fire was battled from the exterior for about four hours using ladder pipes and other large streams before it was deemed under control. The building was a total loss and demolished the following day. The cause is under investigation.The Last major apartment building fire in Warwick was Feburary 24,2010 when a four alarm fire leveled a similar type building at Trafalgar East Apartments at 5300 Post Road on the East Greenwich line. The largest fire prior to that was on March 17, 2003 when a five alarm fire destroyed a commercial building at 7 Cypress Street.
